How it works

Formulas and reference values: how we convert. Want it on paper? Get the printable chart.

A cup is a measure of volume, but grams measure weight, so the answer depends on what you are measuring. One cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 120 grams, while one cup of granulated sugar weighs about 200 grams and one cup of honey about 340 grams. That is why a single cups to grams number does not exist, and why this converter asks for the ingredient first.

Weighing ingredients is the most reliable way to bake. Cups can vary by 20 percent or more depending on how tightly flour is packed, while a kitchen scale gives the same result every time. Use the converter to translate any American recipe into grams, or enter grams to see the cup measure. The values come from commonly used reference weights and may differ slightly between brands.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup?

It depends on the ingredient. A US cup is 236.6 ml of volume, so a cup of flour is about 120 g, sugar about 200 g, butter about 227 g and water about 237 g.

Is a cup of flour 120 g or 125 g?

Most sources use 120 to 125 g for all-purpose flour that is spooned into the cup and leveled. If you scoop straight from the bag, a cup can reach 140 g or more, which is why baking by weight is more reliable.

Are US cups the same as UK or metric cups?

No. A US cup is about 237 ml, a metric cup is 250 ml and the old UK imperial cup was about 284 ml. For small amounts the difference is minor, but it adds up in large batches.

Should I use grams or cups for baking?

Grams. A kitchen scale removes the guesswork and gives the same result every time, especially for flour, which compacts easily.
