Flour is the ingredient where cups and grams disagree the most. A cup of all-purpose flour is usually listed at 120 to 125 grams, but a cup scooped straight from the bag can weigh 140 grams or more because the flour gets compacted. That extra 20 grams is enough to turn a soft cake into a dry one.
This converter uses spooned-and-leveled weights for all-purpose, bread, cake, whole wheat, self-rising, almond, coconut and rye flour, plus cornmeal and cornstarch. Pick your flour, enter the cups, tablespoons or teaspoons, and read the weight in grams and ounces. If your recipe was written in grams, switch the direction to see the cup equivalent.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of all-purpose flour?
About 120 g when spooned and leveled. Some sources use 125 g, and a cup scooped directly from the bag can be 140 g or more.
Why does a cup of cake flour weigh less than all-purpose flour?
Cake flour is finer and softer, so a cup holds slightly less by weight, about 114 g compared with 120 g for all-purpose flour.
Does sifting change the weight of a cup?
Yes. Sifted flour is airier, so a cup of sifted flour weighs less than a cup scooped from the bag. If a recipe says sifted flour, check whether the sifting happens before or after measuring.
How do I measure a cup of flour without a scale?
Fluff the flour with a fork, spoon it lightly into the cup and level the top with a knife. Do not scoop with the cup itself or tap it down.
